A Letter from
our President
¡°The best place
in China is Xiamen, and the best place in Xia-men is Xiamen University,¡±
exclaimed a foreigner who has traveled all over China. And on behalf of
our large Chinese and foreign community, I warmly welcome you to Xiamen
University¡ªChina¡¯s most beautiful campus, and one of the most international
institutes in the country.
XMU was founded in
1921 by Mr. Tan Kah-Kee, the well-known, patriotic overseas Chinese leader
who was respected by the late Chairman Mao Tsetung as ¡°the flag of Overseas
Chinese and the honour of the Chinese nation¡±. Since day one, our motto
of ¡°Pursuing excellence and striving for perfection¡± has inspired generations
of XMU staff and students to overcome difficulties one after another and
to achieve success And 85 years of un-stinting devotion and hard work
has earned XMU the title of ¡°Strength of the South¡± and a distinguished
reputation both at home and abroad.
A pioneer in China¡¯s
international education and cooperation, we have over 1600 full-time overseas
students, as well as over 31,000 Chinese students. Scholars the world
over are attracted not only by our excellent academic traditions, superb
staff, and advanced research facilities, but also by our idyllic campus
on Xiamen Island, the ¡°Garden City.¡± And some scholars not only visit
but stay¡ªlike Dr. Bill Brown, who has been teaching MBA here since 1988.
Dr. Brown was XMU¡¯s first foreigner to be granted tenure and the first
in Fujian Province to receive Permanent Residence, and he received the
Friendship Award from Premier Li Peng for his contributions as a foreign
expert to China¡¯s development. Dr. Brown has long wanted to share with
others his deep feelings and unique perspective for XMU, and today he
has achieved his dream. I believe that all who read this book, whether
they¡¯ve been to our school or not, or whether they are a student, teacher
or worker, will gain a deeper understanding of XMU, as well as a greater
reverence and appreciation for Tan Kah Kee, Lim Boon-Keng, Sah Ben Dong,
Wang Yanan and other giants upon whose shoul-ders our university stands.
Finally, I¡¯d like
to take this opportunity to express my thanks to Dr. Brown and Robin Feifei
for this gift which they have given to our university for its 85th anniversary.
Chongshi Zhu
