Veggie Tails Vegetarian Cuisine in Xiamen

For over a century folks have feasted on Nánpǔtuó’s Temple’s (南普陀) vegetarian fare—a feast for eyes as well as stomach (but as Japanese say, “The eyes eat, as well as the stomach”). Dèng Xiǎopíng liked their taro so much he had his chef take 200 pounds back to Běijīng.
(Warning: never eat taro with beef. It’s taro-bull).

Millennium Harbourview Hotel Xiamen's s Loong Yuen Restaurant had their chefs specially trained at a top monastery so they could accodomate the ascended palates of Buddhist leaders who come from all over the planet to visit Nanputuo. Ask for Millennium's special vegetarian menu.

7th Day Adventist Sanatorium, Gǔlàngyǔ (Měihuá Lǎorén Liáoyǎng Yuàn 美华老人疗养院) -- excellent vegetarian, inexpensive. Phone one day ahead. They bake whole grain breads, make homemade noodles, and are happy to sell their organic grains. Take a healthy retreat in this beautiful hilltop center and stay a few days. To get there, take the ferry that goes to the back of the island to the Gǔlàng Villa Hotel (Gǔlàngyǔ Biéshù Jiúdiàn 鼓浪别墅酒店) . From the ferry, turn right, walk up the coast a bit, ascend the narrow granite path (behind the bust of the man who invented Pinyin), take the left fork; it will be just past the cemetery on the hilltop. Dàfāng Vegetarian (大方素食馆Sùshí Guǎn) Another favorite, just outside Xiamen Univ., facing the International Bookstore on the Corner. I love their vegetarian sweet ‘n sour ribs—veggie bones and all!—or veggie fish (replete with head, scales and veggie tails! And try their vegetarian Jiǎozi.

Sophie’s Vegetarian Café (Sùwèipài Shàngshí Cāntīng 素味派尚时餐厅) Large selection; no meat, eggs, or MSG. Nice décor upstairs.
