150 years ago, locals did not care
for foreign doctors. They thought scalpels came in a set, with fork, and
foreign doctors ate their Chinese patients. (Well, I like eating Chinese
myself, but not Chinese!)
Judging from the centuries of Chinese
doctor jokes, Chinese weren't keen on Chinese doctors either. Fortunately,
times have changed...
Xiamen
has over 1000 medical establishments, including an advanced
eye care facility utilizing the latest laser surgery. Zhongshan
Hospital, which has a foreign ward with English-speaking doctors and
nurses, is so advanced that on Nov. 7, 2002, they performed an artificial
heart implant on three year old Zhou Boling (the implant for the poor
son of migrants was funded by donations from local citizens). A young
friend of ours had open heart surgery in Zh¨ngsh¨¡n, and two American friends
had laparoscopic surgery to remove their gall bladders (Americans must
have a lot of gall).

Chang Gung Hospital--#1! ÏÃÃų¤¸ýÒ½Ôº
THE best hospital within 500 miles! Over our
20 years here, the two big problems we have faced have been 1) education
(now we have Xiamen International School) and medical--and
now we have Xiamen Chang Gung Hospital! This Taiwan-built and run
hospital has extremely efficient and professional English-speaking Taiwan
doctors. They have been a life-saver (literally) for us several
times the past few months. It is in Haicang, so you'll need to take
a taxi across the Haicang Suspension Bridge, straight ahead through the
tunnel, then straight on for a km. or so. I strongly recommend you
go here before anywhere else. Visit their website for more info,
but though the hospital has English-speaking personnel and doctors, the
website is only in Chinese. Go figure.

Lifeline
Medical System
Warning! Do NOT depend on
this so-called "Lifeline." Ever
since longtime resident M. B. opened Lifeline Medical, I have enthusiastically
recommended, and promoted it in all of my books and websites. But after
today's experience, I am warning people against this so-called "lifeline".
We were happy to see the Lifeline sign said it was "Open," but
the doctor and three nurses in a back room giggling and cracking jokes
ignored us until one finally came out, asked what we wanted, and told
us they were "closed indefinitely for Western medical services!"
I asked why the four of them were there, and the sign said "Open,"
and she said they had to have the sign because they were still legal!
So they still pay for an open office and four people, but offer no services?
Right.
We went to Zhongshan Hospital instead, where I received fast, efficient
care. Don't put false hope in this "Lifeline".
Add: Find it elsewhere if you're really determined to do so.
