Prescription or Subscription?
An English teacher corrected a student who said he had gotten a "prescription"
for Common Talk at the post office. "You should say 'subscription,'
the teacher said. But I think 'prescription' was okay too, because a weekly
dose of Common Talk is just what the doctor ordered for Chinese and foreigners
who want to know what's happening, and why (or why not).
I love studying Xiamen and Fujian's history,
but to keep abreast with what's happening today, I read Common Talk. Common
Talk has even helped me with my books (they
translated "Discover Gulangyu"
and CT photographer Yao Fan has provided many photographs). CT is helping
people abroad as well. The last issue had a page with old black and white
photographs submitted by an Overseas Chinese seeking his roots. CT is
helping both Laowai and Laonei--but CT also needs your
help as well!
Common Talk Needs You!
Become part of Team Commontalk, not just as reader but as writer.
CT is always seeking input from the Xiamen community in the form of articles,
or 300- to 400-word "Opinion" pieces, or attend their weekly
English Club (Xiamen's largest).
Post Offices sell Common
Talk. They also offer Common Talk "prescriptions" for your weekly
dose of the latest news on not just Xiamen but the rest of China (they
even throw in some news from back on earth as well). Click
for Common Talk Website.

Xiamen
Daily Common Talk Weekly is Fujian¡¯s only bilingual weekly, and the first
bilingual publication in China from a state-owned newspaper. Common Talk¡¯s
mission is to showcase Xiamen and Fujian with an international style that
suits Xiamen¡¯s cosmopolitan readers. With local news, interviews and
modern lifestyle reports, Common Talk is a record of Fujian¡¯s economic
development, but it also serves to synthesize Chinese and western culture
and promote a harmonious society. For both Chinese and overseas readers,
it is an important window on Xiamen and southern China.
In the four years since its foundation, Common Talk has built a name for
itself and has become one of the many attractive features of the beautiful
city of Xiamen. Common Talk has been chosen as English language media
partner by CIFIT (China International Fair for Investment & Trade),
the World Choir Games, Xiamen International Tourism Festival, Xiamen
International Marathon, Xiamen International Optoelectronics Exhibition
and the Xiamen International Forum for Coastal Cities. In this capacity,
Common Talk provides international visitors with the best in international
information. It is a visitor¡¯s most direct route to understanding Chinese
cities. Since February 2006, Common Talk has also had its own international
publication number, and with orders from Xiamen¡¯s eleven sister cities,
Common Talk is now read in ten different countries on five continents.

Guide to Xiamen and Fujian
At the same time, Common Talk provides high quality study materials and
organizes a range of activities for Chinese learners interested in English
and the international scene: English speech contests, youth talent competitions,
reader surveys and readers¡¯ days, bilingual writing competitions, the
100th edition celebrations¡ Our English Club, with weekly events, has
been running for two years and is Xiamen¡¯s largest and most important
English learning organization. The first time Common Talk organized the
Fujian heats of the national Star of Outlook English talent contest, Fujian
ranked seventh in the nation. Common Talk was also recognized as a top
organizer by CCTV and the Beijing Olympic Committee.
With
these two major markets, Common Talk has attracted attention from all
over China. Common Talk¡¯s remarkable growth and the events it has hosted
have been covered in interviews and special reports in the China News
and Press Newspaper, China Press Journal, the Xinhua News Agency and Fujian
Education TV.
Common Talk: a visitor¡¯s guide to a pleasurable stay in Xiamen, a learner¡¯s
companion in making their English dreams come true.
Dr. Bill Brown has been one of Common Talk¡¯s staunchest supporters and
readers, and we are pleased to work with him in presenting Xiamen to the
world and the world to Xiamen.
