Young
Men's Christian Association (YMCA) was
founded in London in 1844 and iscs now a global Christian social service
organization with over 45 million members in 124 countries.
Xiamen
YMCA, one of China¡¯s first (after Tianjin,
Shanghai,
Beijing, and Guangzhou)
was started in April, 1912 by the UK YMCA representative,
Mr. H.S. Mackenze, who had arrived
in May 1910. The Xiamen YMCA was opened in
a rented office of the G¨³l¨¤ngy¨³ Union Church (now #60 F¨²ji¨¤n Road). The
first elected members of the board of directors were Chen Tianen, Zhang
Yongshun, Zheng Bainian, Mi Yage, Fan Liwen, and Wan Luoma. H S Mackenze
was invited to be the first General Secretary, and Wang Zongren acted
as Secretary.
The
World Alliance of YMCAs, established at the 1st international
conference in 1855 in Paris, is the world¡¯s oldest international volunteer
organization and is now based in Geneva, Switzerland. The YMCA is increasingly
active again in China, with centers in Taiwan Province,
Hong Kong (1901) and Macao,
as well as ten mainland Chinese cities: Tianjian
(1895), Shanghai, Guangzhou
(1909), Xiamen (1910), Hangzhou
(1914), Xi¡¯an, Wuhan, Nanjing
(1912) and Chengdu (1910), as well as Taiwan
Province, Hong Kong and Macao.
Xiamen YMCA continues to courage youth involvement
in social and community services by setting up school
programs, disaster relief activities, summer camps, choruses and student
activities. Xiamen YMCA set up the city¡¯s first sports program, which
made a significant contribution to Xiamen¡¯s development of modern sports.
Xiamen YMCA held Xiamen¡¯s first sports meet in Yanwu Ting on Nov. 27,
1915. The YMCA held Xiamen¡¯s first swim meet in 1931 at Gulangyu¡¯s Ti¨¢nw¨§i
Rd beach, and Xiamen¡¯s first boat races in 1934. Morris notes that the
YMCA had a great impact on modern sports throughout China:
¡°By 1907, staff at the Tianjin YMCA
were rallying their Chinese charges with the cry: When will China be able
to send a winning athlete to the Olympic contests? When will China be
able to invite all the world to Peking for an International Olympic contest?
Nearly a century later, on the eve of China's first-ever Olympic games,
this innovative book shows for the first time how sporting culture and
ideology played a crucial role in the making of the modern nation-state
in Republican China.¡± Andrew Morris¡¯ ¡°Marrow of the Nation¡ªa History of
Sport and Physical Culture in Republican China.¡±

Did
you know? These sports
were invented in YMCAs:
Racquetball (1950, Greenwich, Conn. YMCA)
Volleyball (1895, Holyoke, Mass. YMCA)
Basketball (Dec. 1891, YMCA Int'l Training School).
Professional" American football(1895, a Pennsylvania
YMCA)
The term "bodybuilding" was first used
in 1881 in Boston YMCA.
The name "Softball" was coined by a member
of Denver YMCA.
YMCA's modern swimming lessons influenced modern
sports, & military training. P.S.
Just joking about the HD television! |
Anti-Japanese
Efforts During world war II, Xiamen YMCA initiated the
public anti-Japanese resistance movement. In September, 1936, Xiamen YMCA
invited Mr.Li Gongbo from Shanghai to give a speech
entitled, ¡°The International Situation and China¡±. Three months later,
in December, Mr. Liu Liangmo, the secretary of the student department
of the National Association of YMCAs of China came to the Xiamen YMCA
to organize a chorus and teach anti-Japanese songs.
Xiamen YMCA¡¯s activities were forced to stop
during the ¡°the Cultural
Revolution¡± but resumed after 1978, and in 1984 the central government
gave formal approval for Xiamen YMCA to resume work as a legal social
service organization. Today, Xiamen YMCA is unique in that it is the only
one that is not located in a provincial capital city or a city directly
under the jurisdiction of the central government.
Xiamen YMCA¡¯s major social services now include
cultivation of poor students, professional training, and cultural &
sports activities. A Xiamen YMCA team of volunteers consisting largely
of retired Christian physicians has long provided free medical services
and medicine for residents of poorer suburban areas. The program has been
warmly received, especially by village communities.
