Rent a catamaran, or fly a kite, or go windsurfing! Or strolls the miles of delightful Boardwalk! (Our favorite--we walk it almost every morning).

Bowling Big Egg Bowling Alley, above the department store at 358 Xiahe Road, has the cheapest games in town (ranging from Y5 to Y20, depending upon the time of day). Big Egg supplies shoes but bring your own socks.

After a few games of bowling, you can get your mind out of the gutter by playing billiards in an adjacent room. Better yet, see how many laps you can manage on the indoor gasoline go-carts before you succumb to the carbon monoxide (piece of cake for L.A. natives). (More go-karting below!).

Hua Yi Bowling Center, on N. Hubin Rd., has at least 40 alleys, with much nicer equipment than Big Egg’s. But it’s also much more expensive. (Unlike Big Egg, it must cater to Big Potatoes).

Golf Southern Wood Golf & Country Club, 50 kilometers out of Xiamen towards Zhangzhou, gives you sand traps and salt air in one package. Call (596) 688-1555 to arrange a day, or stay for a weekend in a bungalow.

Go-Karting The Big Egg Bowling Alley has a nice little in-door go-kart track, but for a real Indianapolis 500 feeling, try the Indy Go-Karting Center—a large outdoor track in the Bailu Zhou recreation area (on Yundang Lake). Those little cars are fast—but relatively safe. No children have been killed in several weeks. Rates are cheaper before 6:00 p.m. Phone: 508-1333 or 508-2333.

Movies--(in English! with Chinese subtitles). See the latest foreign movies in theater on the 5th floor (top floor, opposite end of the Food Court) of the World Trade Center Mall (beside the train station--with Wal-Mart Supercenter in the basement). They showed Lord of the Rings about the same time as it was shown anywhere else in Asia. Phone: 580-5408 581-5000

Xiamen Water Park Xiamen Water Park has enough water slides and pools to keep you busy for hours on a hot summer afternoon. It’s located in Huli, just down the road from the big double tunnel.

Swimming Pools (Youyong Chi) -- Holiday Inn and Marco Polo have nice pools but a less expensive route is to buy a 30 visit pass, for only 300 RMB, at the Huli Sports Center. It’s near the corner of HaiTian Rd. and Huli Park, behind the theater. Phone: 602-5886.

Xiamen World Gardens (Xiamen Jingzhou Leyuan), or “Taiwan Folk Village,” as I think it’s now called, is out on the beach road, in Huangcuo Village. The boys like the wood and rope obstacle courses (a maze of swinging bridges, nets, balancing bars, deng deng). We also enjoyed the wild animal shows, and Taiwan folk dance performances.
