Mao Zedong's 1917 article on exercise
"Health,
Wealth, or Both?"
Xiamen
YMCA/YWCA
The
young Mao Zedong¡¯s first treatise, published
in 1917, was a compelling and even humorous treatise on the nation¡¯s
need for exercise! And Xiamen people have taken him at his word. Every
morning you¡¯ll see walkers and joggers along the Island Ring Road, the
Boardwalk, Yuandang Lake, and the Bund. I myself start each morning with
a brisk run (from the bedroom to the bathroom).
Xiamen is also blessed with numerous modern fitness centers. If you¡¯ve
got the bucks, most quality hotels have fitness centers. Try Crowne Plaza,
Marco Polo, Xiamen International Seaside Hotel, Best Western, Powerlong
Hotel, etc. Or try the Aqua Fitness Center at Hilford Hotel, near Xiamen
University. Buy a pass card for 5000 Yuan
and get in for 25 Yuan a shot; includes exercise machines, sauna, Jacuzzis,
numerous pools (salt and fresh water). Added benefit of the passcard:
it gives you rooms at half price.
