Aquatic Sports

Xiamen Underwater World Aquarium Gulangyu ( Xiàmén Hǎidǐ Shìjiè 　厦门海底世界) Built in 1998 at a cost of over 10 million USD, it is one of China’s best aquariums. 7500m2 of displays have over 10,000 creatures of 350 species. See sharks up close as you walk through the plexiglass tunnel. And the seal and dolphin shows give one a real sense of porpoise Exit the Gǔlàngyǔ ferry and it’s the blue-roofed complex just to the right, behind the gigantic octopus sculpture. Tel: 2067668

Xiamen Happy Valley Water Park (Xiàměn Kuàilè Gǔ Shuǐshàng Lèyuán 厦门快乐谷水上乐园 Xiamen Water Park has enough water slides and pools to keep you busy for hours on a hot summer afternoon. It’s located in Huli, just down the road from the big double tunnel.

Swimming Pools (Yóuyǒng Chí 游泳池) -- Holiday Inn and Marco Polo have nice pools but a less expensive route is to buy a 30 visit pass, for only 300 RMB, at the Húlǐ Sports Center (湖里体育馆). It’s near the corner of Hǎitiān Lù d. and Huli Park, behind the theater. Tel: 6025886.

I was reading an airline magazine on a flight across the Pacific when I learned that one of Asia’s top ten hot springs resorts is Riyuegu (Sun Moon Valley), in Xìnglín District （兴林区), just 20 minutes outside of Xiàmén! They have 72 open-air pools and thirty-five specialty hot springs (milk bath, beer bath, rose bath? You name it, they’ll soak you in it!).

Virtually every hot springs in China is said to have beneficial ailments that will cure your ills, and this place is no exception. They say the waters which bubble forth at 82oC posses traces of potassium, sodium, calcium, manganese, bromine, magnesium, etc. Frequent soaking in Sun Moon Valley will relieve your arteriosclerosis, gynecological disorders, high cholesterol, diabetes, skin diseases, insomnia, arthritis, and digestive ailments—plus encourage blood circulation and cell regeneration! Ponce De Leon was on the wrong continent! But Sun Moon Valley’s claims date back long before Leon’s birth.

Stories of Sun Moon Valley supposedly date back over 1000 years. And about 500 years ago, a high ranking Míng Dynasty official, Mr. Dīng Yìzhōng (丁一中), who enjoyed trekking through the mountains, heard of the springs’ curative properties and promptly immersed himself. It is said he experienced such bliss that he wrote some verses about it, in which he noted the springs were found neither in the city or the mountains but on simple agricultural land, next to a road, so common folk could enjoy a bath without having to waste fire wood—a gift from heaven to the common folk.

The stone plaque with the inscription was discovered in the 1980s by Mr. Bǎi Yùshèng (白玉盛) a returned Indonesian Chinese who taught at Hǎicāng Dōngfú Elementary School (海沧区东孚小学) The plaque identified the springs as being at the site of Sun Moon Valley.

Whether the medicinal claims are true or not, it is a delightful place to spend a day or a weekend.
